This PhD project offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to the development of the dosimetry standards that will support the next generation of cancer radiotherapy. The successful candidate will join a collaborative research programme between University College London (UCL) and the National Physical Laboratory (NPL), focused on establishing a robust dosimetry framework for Very High Energy Electron (VHEE) radiotherapy. VHEE radiotherapy is an emerging treatment modality that has the potential to transform cancer care through improved dose delivery to deep-seated tumours while reducing radiation exposure to surrounding healthy tissues. Despite its promise, there is currently no internationally established dosimetry protocol for VHEE beams. This project will address this critical challenge by developing, validating, and implementing accurate dosimetry methodologies traceable to primary standards. The student will work within a UKRI-funded Future Leaders Fellowship programme investigating dosimetry for advanced radiotherapy, including FLASH radiotherapy applications. The research will combine experimental measurements, detector characterisation, computational modelling, and international collaboration with leading accelerator and radiotherapy research facilities. Key responsibilities will include: Developing and evaluating reference conditions for VHEE dosimetry. Performing high-accuracy radiation measurements using calorimeters, ionisation chambers, and other advanced dosimetry systems. Investigating the performance of novel and commercially available radiation detectors in VHEE beams. Supporting experimental studies through Monte Carlo simulations and computational modelling. Contributing to research campaigns at national and international VHEE facilities. Analysing complex experimental data and disseminating research findings through scientific publications and conference presentations. Collaborating with leading experts in medical physics, dosimetry, metrology, radiation measurement, and radiotherapy. The student will be based within NPL's internationally recognised Radiation Dosimetry Group while maintaining strong links with UCL. This unique environment will provide access to world-class facilities, specialist instrumentation, and expertise in measurement science. The successful candidate will receive comprehensive training in radiation dosimetry, detector physics, computational methods, scientific communication, and project management, preparing them for a future career in academia, national laboratories, healthcare, or the wider radiation sciences sector. This PhD provides a unique opportunity to conduct impactful research at the forefront of medical physics and to help establish the measurement foundations required for the safe and effective clinical implementation of VHEE radiotherapy.
