Job Title: Machinist
Job Description
The Machinist sets up and verifies cutting tools, and performs a wide range of machining operations—including boring, drilling, milling, tapping, and threading—on raw materials to produce precision parts that meet exact engineering specifications, tolerances, and dimensions.
Responsibilities
- Set up and verify cutting tools in accordance with specific machine and job requirements.
- Perform conventional machining operations such as boring, drilling, milling, tapping, and threading on raw materials.
- Machine parts to precise tolerances and dimensions as defined by engineering drawings and specifications.
- Work with materials including mild steel, stainless steel, and aluminum to fabricate parts accurately.
- Apply proper methods for processing materials and machining parts to minimize waste and prevent costly material losses.
- Use appropriate shop practices and machining techniques to avoid machine delays and support certification efforts.
- Operate conventional and computerized machining equipment, including mills and lathes, to complete assigned work.
- Operate tool grinding equipment to maintain and prepare cutting tools as needed.
- Inspect parts during and after machining to verify conformance to required specifications.
- Maintain a clean and organized work area and follow all shop safety procedures and guidelines.
Essential Skills
- At least 3 years of machining experience.
- Minimum of 1 year of conventional machining experience.
- Working knowledge of the properties of mild steel, stainless steel, and aluminum as they relate to part fabrication.
- Thorough knowledge of proper methods for processing materials and machining parts to prevent material waste and machine delays.
- Ability to operate conventional and computerized machining equipment, including mills and lathes.
- Ability to operate tool grinding equipment.
- Proficiency in machining operations such as boring, drilling, milling, tapping, and threading.
- Ability to read and follow engineering specifications and tolerances.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience machining aluminum and other metals in a fabrication or job-shop environment.
- Experience working with mills and conventional lathes.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality, precise parts.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple machining tasks in a changing workload.
- Problem-solving skills to identify and correct machining issues during setup and production.

Work Environment
The role is based in a non-climate-controlled facility, where conditions may vary with the seasons. The position is available on 3rd shift (Monday through Friday, approximately 11:30 p.m. to 6:30 a.m.) or 2nd shift (Monday through Friday, approximately 3:30 p.m. to 11:00 p.m.). The dress code requires pants or shorts and a shirt; tank tops and cut-off shirts are not permitted. You will work around mills, lathes, and tool grinding equipment in a hands-on shop environment that supports experimental and non-production machining work.
Job Type & LocationThis is a Contract to Hire position based out of Wichita, KS.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $27.00 - $31.00/hr.
Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
